Abstract: In this presentation I will touch on issues related with teaching statistics and data literacy to elementary preservice mathematics teachers. First, I will focus on statistics as a subtopic of mathematics in K-12 mathematics curriculum and how these two disciplines differ from each other in terms of reasoning and practice. Then I will mention briefly, why we need a better statistical education at the undergraduate level of teacher education programs worldwide and how this issue connects with teaching statistics and data literacy with teaching (mathematics) through technology. Finally I will introduce an open source web based data analysis platform (CODAP) and present a sample statistics task with CODAP that is suitable for upper middle school mathematics levels.
