English word spelling errors of non-native speakers are not random. Rather, they originate from spellers’ assumptions about the word spelling in native and target language as well as the hypotheses drawn from various linguistic and metalinguistic systems integral to word spelling. The present study analyzed a sample of real word spelling errors (N: 1400) made by native Turkish middle schoolers (N: 100) in grades 6, 7, and 8 in Turkey and the results revealed that English phonology and orthography predominantly characterized English word spelling errors of Turkish middle school students. The study has a significant contribution by revealing the problems of a group of foreign language learners. The pedagogic implications suggest effective diagnostic data for English as a foreign language instructors in teaching English as a foreign language literacy instruction and foreign language curriculum designers in developing effective spelling instruction curricula and strategies.
