Abstract: In this presentation, I will share a case study which explores the beliefs of preschool teachers about peer relations of children and strategies teachers use to assess children’s peer relation problems. While teachers’ beliefs and self-reported practices on peer relations and peer relation problems were mainly child-initiated, their actual practices included several teacher-initiated strategies. Drawing on the notion of belief system, I will discuss the possible reasons for such inconsistencies and I will conclude with recommendations for early childhood professionals about promoting peer-related social interactions in the preschool contexts.
