TEDU EFS SEMINARS: Do Educational Centers Offering Supplemental Education in Turkey Increases The Achievement Gap Among Students from Lower SES and Higher-SES?
Erkan Atalmış - Research, Evaluation, Measurement, & Statistics, Kansas University

The number of centers offering supplementary education has rapidly increased in Turkey because they prepare students for nation-wide exams. Often, however, parents from lower SES cannot afford to send their children to these centers, generating a debate among educators and politicians alike about decreasing educational equal opportunities among students from different SES backgrounds. The current study investigated the factors affecting parents sending their children to take courses from these centers. Findings showed that parents with higher SES, including those with higher levels of education, the location of the schools (rural versus urban), and students with higher math performance are most likely to be the ones who attend such centers, which is showing stark effects at actually increasing the gap between educational equal opportunities among students from different SES background.
