WHY WE LEARN MATHEMATICS
“I can understand why we should learn to do calculation. Indeed, even they are done for instance at the cashier in a super market. Then, why we have to learn all of these extra things?”
“A lot of people believe that mathematics is important; but why... we don’t use most of the mathematics that we learn in our life. Why we learn the things that we do not actually need?”
It can be said that these and similar questions arise from people’s different perceptions of mathematics. But, is it possible to chance these perceptions, create a common mathematics perception for everyone, and make people to recognize the necessity of mathematics in life?
Dr. Vesife HATISARU at the Faculty of Education Department of Mathematics and Science Education and Dr. Engin ÖZKAN at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Department of Mathematics would like to meet you to discuss on these matters.
