On December 2, 2023, Prof. Dr. Belgin Elmas, the Head of the Department of Foreign Languages at TED University, conducted a seminar with the parents of TED Mersin College on the topic of "First Language Acquisition and Foreign Language Teaching."
Elmas discussed when first language acquisition begins, how the process works, what should be done in the foreign language teaching process, what to avoid, and how theory can be transformed into practice on topics such as developing study habits in children, and what schools and families can do. She talked about what parents can do with their children at home. The seminar had separate sessions for preschool and primary school parents in the morning, and secondary school and high school parents in the afternoon, with age-appropriate discussions in each session.
Elmas shared insights into evaluating parents' expectations for their children's foreign language learning process based on scientific data and discussed how parents can establish healthy communication with their children. The seminar was highly productive, with active participation from parents who contributed their own life examples and questions.
